An unknown author once said, “At first they’ll ask why you’re doing it. Later, they’ll ask how you did it.”
I know this is true, because it’s happened to me on many occasions since I attended the Ultimate Travel Writer’s Workshop in 2014.
And I’m more than happy to share how I’ve managed to get over 300 articles published in digital and print publications in only three and a half years… as well as being invited on a multitude of all-inclusive press trips.
What my success ultimately comes down to is this: I took action. I signed up for the travel writer’s workshop. And that has made all the difference in the world.
I left that workshop inspired and determined to make this travel-writing career happen. I believed that if I followed the program presented by Great Escape Publishing’s expert team of editors and travel writers that I could transform my dream into a reality. That dream was traveling the world without always having to pull out my charge card to pay for those trips. And perhaps, I could retire early from my nursing career and still have an income stream from my writing.
Since then, that has all happened, and more. Taking action brought with it more benefits than I’d ever thought possible.
The great part is that anyone can do it. I don’t have a degree in journalism. But, by attending the workshop, I gained the inside track on navigating the world of travel writing.
See your name in print
I’ll never forget the feeling of seeing my name in print for the first time on a travel article. Was this really happening to me?
And, if that wasn’t exhilarating enough, later seeing one of my articles selected for the cover story was almost indescribable.
Since then, I’ve landed six more covers. And all because I learned how to craft a quality pitch and deliver follow-on stories my editors loved.
Land perks and press trips
When I first heard the workshop presenters share their photos and experiences from all the incredible places they’d been, I thought “Why can’t this be me?” If they could do it, so could I.
As a result, sunset sails, kayaking trips, hot air ballooning, and zip lining are just some of the adventures I’ve had as a travel writer. I’ve been wined and dined by Cordon Bleu chefs, and I’ve stayed in luxury villas, treehouses, and historic inns in some of the world’s most beautiful places.
All these wonderful experiences and many more didn’t cost me a penny. They were graciously provided because I learned the secret of how to land these amazing perks and trips in exchange for published articles.
Get paid to travel the world
Travel writing is the easiest and most fun “job” I’ve ever had in my life. I call it a job but for only for one reason: I get paid to do it.
Yes, I get all the benefits that come with the travel writer’s life, but I also receive a paycheck from magazines that are hungry for stories from freelance writers.
By utilizing all the tools I learned at the workshop—like how to find publications that pay writers—I’m out there selling stories like crazy.
There was a time I honestly thought magazines only hired their own staff writers. 2014 changed all that for me.
I took the leap and I’ve never looked back.
