I know how it is. I’ve been there, longing to be a travel writer but not knowing where to begin, wondering whether anyone would even read what I wrote. And when would I have time to write? After all, I had a full-time job and a family to take care of. So I put my writing ambitions on the back burner.

Then I read about Great Escape Publishing’s Money-Making Travel Blogs program, and my travel writing desire reignited. I’d had enough of my pessimistic procrastination. I wanted to break into travel writing, and a blog seemed the easiest way to do it.

Once I built my blog, following step-by-step instructions from the course, I published my first article. I told my friends and family about it. Instead of the ribbing I feared, I received congratulatory notes and encouragement. And when I started getting invitations to press trips from area tourism bureaus, my confidence skyrocketed.

In a little more than two years, I’ve published over 260 articles on my blog, which have been read by more than 50,000 people. Several of my articles have been featured on tourism blogs and websites. I’ve been on numerous press trips and have spoken at a state tourism conference. My only regret is that I didn’t take the plunge sooner.

Tips on getting started:

  • Just do it. Spend time working on your blog every day, even if it’s only a half-hour, to keep up your momentum.
  • Choose a niche, whether it’s as broad as family travel or as narrow as horseback trails.
  • Write articles as though you’re telling a friend about your experiences.
  • Network with other travel bloggers through Facebook groups.
  • Connect with tourism bureaus. Follow them on social media, and send them links to articles you’ve written about their areas.
