Great Escape Radio host, Jody Maberry, and Director, Lori Allen, talked about the recent Ultimate Travel Writer’s Workshop in Washington DC in the last few episodes of Great Escape Radio. (Listen to Episode 80 here and Episode 81 here to listen in.) This week, Lori talks about the next steps to success.
Jody poses a question:
“Lori, have you ever seen an article or photograph jump off the computer and publish itself?”
“Not once,” says Lori. “People need to recognize that writing travel articles and getting them published are two different skills. The same is true for photography. Taking photos and selling photos are two different skills.”
In fact, the same is true for all types of art—musicians, painters, etc. What it takes to be successful and what it takes to create art are often two different things.
Lori explains…
People often attend a travel writing or photography workshop with the mindset that they need to learn how to write a good story or take a good photo. But, you also need to take the time to learn how to market those stories and photos.
A lot of people respond to the romance of travel writing—getting paid to go to a destination and write about it. But it’s important to carve out the time to research publications, write queries and handle the business side of travel writing. And for photography, setting aside time to edit and upload images for stock agencies.
Our programs and workshops provide all the information you need to cover the art and business side of travel writing and photography. Listen in as Lori and Jody discuss the process in more detail.
